The Mechanical Estimator plays a vital role by providing accurate cost estimates for mechanical systems in projects. This position involves analysing project specifications and collaborating with various managers to develop detailed estimates for plumbing, HVAC, and other mechanical components. The Mechanical Estimator works closely with project managers, engineers, subcontractors, and suppliers to ensure that estimates are competitive, realistic, and aligned with project requirements.

Responsibilities and Duties.

  • Review architectural and engineering drawings, specifications, and project documents to understand the scope, requirements, and constraints of mechanical systems.
  • Conduct site visits and surveys to assess existing conditions, identify potential challenges, and gather necessary information for accurate estimations.
  • Analyse project components, including materials, equipment, labour, and overhead costs, to develop detailed estimates for system installation, modifications, and upgrades.
  • Utilise estimating software, databases, and historical data to calculate quantities, costs, and pricing for mechanical components and systems.
  • Generate quotes and pricing from subcontractors, suppliers, and vendors for mechanical materials, equipment, and services.
  • Prepare comprehensive and competitive proposals, bid documents, and cost breakdowns outlining the scope of work, pricing, terms, and conditions for mechanical systems.
  • Customise proposals to meet the specific needs and preferences of clients while ensuring profitability and competitiveness for the company.
  • Present estimates and proposals to clients, addressing questions, concerns, and modifications to secure contracts.
  • Work closely with project managers, engineers and other team members to ensure alignment between estimates, project plans, and client expectations.
  • Communicate effectively with clients, subcontractors, suppliers, and vendors to clarify requirements, negotiate pricing, and resolve discrepancies.
  • Coordinate with internal departments, to ensure seamless integration of mechanical estimates into overall project plans.
  • Identify opportunities to improve estimating processes, tools, and methodologies to enhance accuracy, efficiency, and competitiveness.

Key requirements.

  • Bachelor’s degree in mechanical engineering, Construction Management, or related field preferred.
  • Proven experience (3-5 years) in mechanical estimating, preferably in commercial or industrial construction.
  • Proficiency in reading and interpreting mechanical drawings, specifications, and blueprints.
  • Strong knowledge of mechanical systems, including plumbing, HVAC, piping, and equipment.
  • Excellent analytical, mathematical, and problem-solving skills.
  • Effective communication, negotiation, and interpersonal abilities.
  • Detail-oriented with a high level of accuracy.
  • Ability to work independently and collaboratively in a fast-paced environment.
